Having Our Say: Colored TV
The African-American Student Association at HACC, Central Pennsylvania’s Community College, hosted a panel discussion on Feb. 20. The topic was “Having Our Say: Colored TV.” Dr. Carter was one of seven panelists who discussed the misrepresentation of Black men in the media, views of Black women in the media, one-dimensional perspectives of African-Americans, the stereotype threat, effects on younger children and solutions to the challenges.
African-American History Celebration by the Pennsylvania Department of Education Multicultural Committee
The Pennsylvania Department of Education Multicultural Committee presented an African-American History Celebration on Feb. 21. Dr. Carter, the keynote speaker, spoke about “At the Crossroads of Freedom and Equality: The Emancipation Proclamation and the March on Washington.” During her presentation, she presented brief facts about both historic events and talked about the past, present and future of African-Americans as related to education, careers, family, health, politics and sports.
African-American Leaders Forum and Rhythmic Showcase
Hosted by the YWCA Greater Harrisburg in Pennsylvania on Feb. 21, the African-American Leaders Forum and Rhythmic Showcase included a panel discussion on topics of importance to African-Americans. Dr. Carter, one of four panelists, discussed education and opportunity. She discussed the importance of earning a higher education credential, reminded attendees about how higher education changes lives and outlined the benefits of attending community colleges.
