Linnie S. Carter, Ph.D., APR, the president and CEO of Linnie Carter & Associates LLC and a community college administrator, has been selected to represent the state of Virginia as a delegate to Vision 2020.
Carter joins 115 other delegates to Vision 2020, a national project working to make gender equality a national priority through shared leadership among women and men. Vision 2020 was launched in October 2010, when a congress of national delegates met at the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia to launch an action agenda to move America toward equality by 2020, the centennial celebration of the 19th Amendment.
Regarding Vision 2020, Carter said, “Women are the backbone of American society – period. Without good physical, mental, psychological and emotional health, we are no good to those we serve. Without being in strong leadership positions, we will have little opportunity to positively impact our country, the world and those we serve. I wanted to be involved in Vision 2020 for my future and most importantly the future of girls and young women like my nieces, god-daughters and mentees.”
Vision 2020 state delegates are required to create a state initiative with educational aspects that supports women in leadership and shares the mission of Vision 2020 with a wide audience. To this end, Carter will join fellow Virginia delegate, Susan Scanlan, in creating and launching an educational package titled “The 19th Amendment in the 21st Century: Large Lessons for Once and Future Feminists.”
Geared towards girls and young women in middle school, high school and college, this initiative will educate students about the U.S. suffragist movement so that they:
- Understand that the right to vote was hard earned and should be cherished;
- Recognize that history can and has been changed by people who stood up to prejudice, ignorance, social convention and political power; and
- Appreciate and remember the unconventional tactics, overriding strategies and determination that won the vote for women.
